Kobe and Himeji

Himeji Castle

Earlier this week we had the great privilege of visiting the Kobe Mission. As always, the missionaries were amazing and President and Sister McIntyre were delightful to watch in action. Their great love for the work and for their missionaries was evident. It is such a treat for us to associate with so many great people as we serve here in Japan and Korea.

Old moat still flowing with water through the streets of Oosaka

Elders Fukui and Throop took us through streets lined with cherry blossoms

Following the two days of conferences we took a little side trip to Himeji where we were able to visit the great Himeji Castle, believed to be the oldest and largest standing castle; begun in 1333 and added onto over the centuries. The castle that you see in the pictures was finished in 1618 and had major structural rennovations done during the Meji Period, about 1868 and again later in the 1950's and 60's. It is registered as one of the great National Treasures here in Japan. It was very impressive!

Himeji Castle at cherry blossom time!

A view from the third floor of the castle overlooking the city of Himeji. There are three "rings around the castle, beginning with a wall and moat at the castle itself and then another, inside which the Samurai lived. The outer ring, wall, moat complex was for the merchant class. Unfortunately the peasants lived outside and were the first to go in an invasion!

The walls were massive and some of the stones were taken from Buddhist temples. They were not averse to using stone coffins and lanterns to expedite the work.

Darth Vader's predecessor! Armor made from leather and cloth.

Such great pictures you are taking. However, this idea of you enjoying spring is a little hard to swallow; we just got another snow storm. We had a great experience last week. We were in the President's office, and he was showing us a scrap book he had put together and on the very first page we saw the missiionary of the month, Mica Brown, with his ear to ear smile. Thought you might like to know. Enjoy your own mission and making your memorable scrapbook.
